As spring arrives and cats begin their seasonal shedding cycle, pet owners face increased challenges managing fur and dander throughout their homes, according to cleaning experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Carolyn Forté, executive director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab, offers specialized strategies for managing the increased fur that many cats shed during spring months. The techniques prove especially valuable for households where residents suffer from pet allergies, though all cat owners can benefit from reducing hair accumulation on furniture and clothing.

“The key to reducing household allergens is to keep pet dander and hair, dust and other particles from becoming airborne,” Forté explains. She recommends frequent vacuuming with high-quality sealed-system HEPA vacuum cleaners, which trap allergens rather than redistributing them into the air.

Forté advises choosing bagged vacuum cleaners over bagless models, noting that disposing of bags containing allergens creates less mess than emptying dust cups. For additional air quality control, she suggests running multiple high-quality air purifiers in different rooms throughout the house.

Pet owners can significantly reduce allergen exposure by establishing cat-free zones, according to Forté’s recommendations. Keeping cats off furniture and out of bedrooms, or at least off beds, helps minimize fur accumulation in areas where people spend considerable time. Cat trees and wall-mounted climbing shelves provide alternative elevated spaces that satisfy cats’ natural desire for height while protecting furniture.

Forté encourages allergy-conscious cat owners to eliminate throw pillows, blankets, and other difficult-to-wash items that trap allergens. Washing bedding frequently and reducing excess fabric surfaces helps prevent fur and dander accumulation.

Monthly deep cleaning becomes essential for managing cat allergens effectively, with Forté recommending cleaning sessions every other week for households with allergy sufferers. She advises against dry dusting wood and hard furniture surfaces, explaining that this approach “just spreads dust around.” Instead, furniture polish or dusting spray with cloth or microfiber dusters prove more effective at capturing particles.

Regular filter maintenance plays a crucial role in allergen control, according to Forté’s guidance. Cleaning or replacing filters in heating systems, air conditioning units, air purifiers, and vacuum cleaners according to manufacturer recommendations ensures optimal performance. “Dirty filters can’t do a good job,” she notes.

Often-overlooked areas require special attention during cleaning routines. Ceiling fan tops, bookcase surfaces, and heating and cooling vents accumulate dust and cat dander quickly, according to the cleaning expert’s observations. Regular removal of fur from upholstered furniture and weekly bedding washing help maintain cleaner living spaces.

Mattress and pillow protectors prevent allergens from penetrating soft surfaces where people spend significant sleeping hours, reducing overnight exposure to accumulated particles.

Proactive grooming offers another effective strategy for reducing airborne fur and dander. Regular brushing sessions, conducted at least weekly, help remove loose fur before it spreads throughout the home. Short grooming sessions paired with praise and treats help cats adjust to the routine gradually.

The spring shedding season affects many cats as they lose winter coats, making these cleaning strategies particularly relevant during warmer months. Pet owners who implement comprehensive cleaning routines often find significant improvements in air quality and reduced allergen levels throughout their homes.

For households balancing pet ownership with allergy concerns, these professional cleaning techniques offer practical solutions for maintaining comfortable living environments while accommodating feline family members during their heaviest shedding periods.
